Single and Multi-Region Availability

Overview

By default, Unqork creates single-region environments for all Unqork instances. These environments span multiple zones to deliver high availability and redundancy. Static assets, like attachments and the database layer, distribute across zones in the same region. Traffic distributes among healthy Unqork server instances.

Unfortunately, single-region environments aren't resilient to regional cloud service provider outages. But, with multi-region environments, you can continue working even if one of your regions is down.

Multi-Region Environments

Multi-region environments span multiple regions and multiple availability zones in an active-active configuration. You can use either region to continue service if one is down. Each region includes multiple instances of Unqork across availability zones. Static assets, like attachments and database contents, replicate across regions.

Global load balancing directs clients to the best-performing region. Then, local load balancing distributes traffic among the healthy Unqork server instances. For example, if one region is experiencing latency issues, you're directed to the other region. You can also upgrade existing environments or new environment stacks to multi-region configurations.

Multi-Region Considerations

Before setting up or upgrading to multi-region environments, consider the following:

  • Unqork only supports multi-region environments on AWS.

To learn more about supported cloud provider regions, see our Cloud Service Providers: Supported Regions article.

  • Unqork supports multi-region configurations in North America, Europe, and Asia Pacific.

  • Regions should be proximate to each other to optimize the replication of data.

  • You can upgrade existing single-region environments, built on our latest architecture (Kubernetes), to include a second cluster for a different region. The new region includes another set of Unqork IP addresses that customers can add to their IP allow lists.

  • We recommend all environments in a stack share the same topology to support full SDLC in environments. That way, your environments are as production-like as possible.

  • Upgrading from single to multi-region might require downtime.

  • There are additional costs when upgrading a single-region environment to a multi-region environment.

Current Multi-Region Limitations

Before setting up or upgrading to multi-region environments, consider the following:

  • Regions must be on the same cloud service provider. Now, Unqork supports only AWS commercial regions.

  • Multi-region environments are not available on Azure or AWS GovCloud regions.

  • Audit logging is not available in multi-region environments.

  • WORM storage is not available in multi-region environments.
